Many families from Kerala, in search of a newer occupation and expansion of businesses, came and settled in Madurai's surroundings. Their longing to celebrate Syro Malabar's ritualistic holy Qurbana led to the start of worship in Deepaham, a seminary of the CMI mission in Coimbatore, as per the decree (dated 12th May 2009) of Archbishop of Madurai, H.E. Peter Fernando, who appointed Rev. Fr. David Thattil, CMI as the Chaplain of Syro-Malabar Catholics from Kerala for five years. In those days, the church had a few members. Slowly and steadily, more and more families joined the congregation with regular masses.
On 15th April 2018, as per the Eparchy of Thuckalay, Bishop of Thuckalay, H.E. Mar George Rajendran, erected the parish in Deepaham, Meenakshi Nagar, Vilangudi, and the parish was formally officiated as St. Chavara Mission Church. This gave a formal structure to the congregation and gave a fresh lease of energy and the church started to function in its full capacity.
On 1st June 2018, the St. Chavara Mission Church was bestowed with the services of sisters from two congregations, SABS and SJSM, by H.E. Mar George Rajendran, Bishop of Thuckalay. These sisters became an essential part of spreading the message of Jesus to the nearby underprivileged villages. Presently, sisters of the SABS congregation are continuing the good work.
During the pastoral visit from June 1 to 5, 2023, of Bishop H.E. Mar George Rajendran to St. Chavara Mission Church, our Syro Malabar mission had a new chapter in its history. During the General Body meeting of the parishioners, it was mutually decided to shift the entire mission to officially relocate St. Chavara Mission Church to Ariyur on July 2, 2023, in continuation with the Feast of St. Thomas. Fathers from CMI were ordered to conduct the rites and rituals till 25th June 2023 and were given a heartwarming and grateful farewell by the community on the same day.
Ariyur is a small hamlet in the Nagari area of Madurai. One of the very prominent parishioners, Mr. C. Jomichen of Chembarathi house, Ariyur was kind enough to donate 27.5 cents of land for the church's purpose.
After shifting the church premises to Ariyur on 2nd July 2023, St Chavara Mission Church was renamed to the present-day St. Mary's Church, Madurai, on 8th December 2023.
Father John (Jogesh) Polachira, was appointed as the first vicar of St. Mary's Church, Madurai and he is continuing his pastoral responsibilities in developing the faith and devotion of the community.
